Q:  How can I use my Latin to better understand how the earthquake impacted the DC National Cathedral?

A:  The central tower over the crossing is called the Gloria in Excelsis Tower.  You can read about the damage at this link http://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/128317623.html Why would a church name its central crossing this name?  What symbolism is at play here?

Here’s a Dr. Matteo CONTEST:  Write a good translation of Gloria in Excelsis as a comment to this post.  Do you know where that Latin comes from?  I’ll close the contest Sunday 28 August at 12 noon — your prize will be a unique playing card deck!
